What Is the Purpose of a Platform Lift?

A platform lift is a type of lift that is installed inside or outside a building with the aim of transporting people with mobility impairments between levels or floors. Their design typically consists of a platform, with barriers surrounding for safety, that moves vertically up and down using either hydraulics or an electric motor.

These lifts are particularly beneficial to wheelchair users and those with limited mobility and may otherwise struggle to take the stairs. Ultimately, they offer increased accessibility into and within buildings, all whilst providing a sleek and modern design.

The Platform Lift Installation Process

Step 1: Get a Quote

The initial and arguably most important step before getting a platform lift installed in your building is to arrange a preliminary discussion with a lift specialist (such as us here at Lyfthaus) and obtain a quote for the work.

When discussing your requirements with us, we can get a good idea of the scope for the work that will need doing along with your specific requirements. For example, we’d be able to ask you questions regarding the size you’d like your lift to be, the materials and finishes you’d like and the location we’d be installing it.

Of course, a site visit would also be necessary, but this initial discussion would allow us to provide you with a reasonable and realistic quote for the expected work.

Step 2: Site-Specific Design

Once we have discussed your requirements with you, then we will perform a site visit and draft up some design plans specific to your site and the specifications you’re looking for.

This will include essential information regarding your lift design, such as dimensions, loading capacities, materials, functionality features and more. As we said, these will all be specific to your site, which we will have taken into consideration when it comes to the feasibility of your requirements.

Anything that we’re not confident will be realistic or appropriate for your site specifically we will raise with you and suggest an alternative solution.

Step 3: Prepare the Site

After all plans have been agreed and you’re happy for us to go ahead with your lift installation, then we will need to prepare your site ready for the installation to take place.

A site assessment will take place to ensure that there are no delays on installation day. We’ll then prepare the site by making sure the appropriate provisions are in place ready for installation, for example ensuring there is an adequate base to support the lift and other necessary preparations.

Step 4: Lift Installation

Once we’re confident that everything is safe and ready for your lift installation, then it’s time for the actual installation to take place. Our platform lift engineers will expertly install your lift, which can take up to a few days or longer depending on the size and complexity of your lift.

Upon installation, our engineers will be able to demonstrate and instruct you on how to use the lift properly and safely.

Step 5: Final Inspections

The last step is to test that everything is working as it should be and to carry out any and all final inspections of the lift. This includes undertaking an inspection to ensure it meets the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), so that your lift can be issued a LOLER certificate.

And there you have it – your platform lift installation is complete! Our experts will be able to answer any queries you may have and will give you a detailed visual runthrough of the features of your lift. You will also be provided with a user manual and all other necessary paperwork.

Our Expertise

Here at Lyftahus, we don’t expect you to simply just take our word for it when we rave about our expertise and experience. Instead, we want you to see our work for yourself.

We were recently commissioned to install six platform lifts at the Old Trafford stadium – the renowned home grounds of Manchester United. Old Trafford features some of the best stadium facilities for disabled individuals in the world, and we’re proud that we’ve been trusted to add to this further.

We installed stadium and accessibility compliant platform lifts, which can be raised from below ground as required. When not in use, the tiered seating can slide over the top of the lifts to maximise space potential.

As you can see, our lifts offer less able individuals the perfect opportunity to enjoy the game and support their team. Of course, we had to design them in the signature red!
